What is Hypnotherapy?

One of the most common questions I am asked in the process of enquiries in my business is What is Hypnotherapy?? It is becoming better known, especially in the circles I am in now, however it is still one of the most common questions asked.

There are usually 3 questions, in fact. What is hypnotherapy? What's the difference between hypnotherapy and hypnosis? and Does it work?

What is Hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is quite literally, the use of hypnosis for therapeutic purposes. Here's the thing. All hypnosis is self hypnosis. I cannot make you do something you don't want to do. If you really want to make a change in your life, we work together to make that happen. The most important thing is that you are in control the whole time. If you don't like something that is happening, you can stop it straight away.

What is Hypnosis then?
Hypnosis is the act of guiding someone into a trance state. This can be described in many ways, but if you think about it, we have all been in a trance state and probably more often than you realise. For example, a trance state can be described as:

  • a very deep state of relaxation
  • hyperfocus and concentration
  • a state in which you are responsive to increased suggestibility

The bottom line is, most of us go into trance regularly. Have you ever arrived at your destination and realised that you had completely zoned out and don't remember much of the trip there? Have you ever become completely relaxed and in your own world while watching tv or listening to music?

The difference between this and hypnosis for a hypnotherapy session is that in your session, you are guided to this state rather than achieving it naturally. During hypnotherapy, the trance state is induced to achieve something, like quitting smoking or losing weight, or any number of other things.

Does Hypnotherapy Really Work?

Yes! Hypnotherapy works by empowering people to altering and updating their subconscious beliefs. Through hypnosis, we can reframe and update those old beliefs to affect change in your life. To be completely honest, you need to be willing to go on that journey. There needs to be an element of trust and rapport between the hypnotherapist and the client. Hypnotherapy has been an amazing tool used by many and has a long, rich history, backed by science.
