They are just big boned or it’s genetic… For me, I started with a lazy lifestyle and then added an injury that required medication that ballooned my weight in a very short space of time. I could sit here and talk about causes of weight gain, like genetics or insulin issues, medications or even diet and lack of exercise, but some of the lesser known reasons of why weight loss programs fail are actually what’s on my mind. It’s time to stand up and take control of your life and choices.

Why Sleep?

Studies have shown that when we don’t get enough sleep and we don’t get good quality sleep, we tend to make choices that aren’t so great for our bodies. We are far more likely to grab fast food or junk food, or even sugar or caffeine filled drinks to fill that need to have more energy. In fact, a study completed by the University of Chicago found that sleep deprived participants chose snacks with twice as much fat as those who had slept a full 8 hours. There was a study completed in 2010 that concluded that the amount of sleep you get contributes to the maintenance of fat free body mass at times of decreased energy intake, so a lack of sleep may actually compromise any diet, exercise or weight loss plan you are trying to implement.

So what can we do about this?

1 – Control what you can control. You can control what goes into your mouth. You can control how much and for how long your body moves. Limit external factors that affect your sleep, so turning off electronics an hour or two before bed, set up a bed time routine that promotes good quality sleep.

2 – Put on a meditation or hypnosis track before sleep, to really leverage your sleep and focus your unconscious mind on losing weight while you sleep and promoting that really quality sleep so that you wake up feeling refreshed and energised, wanting to eat healthy and exercise. This will also help to turn off the brain chatter and help you get to sleep more quickly.

3 – Go to bed earlier. This does a few things. It helps to lessen late night snacking, where we are most likely to mindlessly eat while watching tv or similar. It also gives your body an amazing chance at fixing, repairing and giving your body a longer chance to do some healing over night.

I don’t know if you’ve ever noticed, but when you are in a good place mentally, it is easier to make good food and lifestyle choices. You feel good, you make good choices. When there is an emotional or psychological component to your weight and you are not in a great place, it is more difficult to make those good choices. The problem with a lot of weight loss programs is that they overlook this psychological side. If you also look at the prevalence of emotional eating – stress equals eating, sadness equals eating, good decision equals eating – where eating is a reward for positive or negative things happening in your life. If we can work on straightening that out in your wiring first, the weight loss program will move a whole lot easier. Given all of this, it comes as no surprise that researchers have found a link between things like stress, anxiety and depression and a higher body mass index.

So, what can you do about this?

1 – Accept the skin you’re in. This is often difficult but is also an amazing place to start. You were given the body you were given. Sometimes we haven’t been able to control the weight gain or loss. This is about you accepting where you are at physically and emotionally and using that as your baseline. A point to move forward from.

2 – Work on your motivation. Have an end goal in sight and work on your belief that you can get there. If it feels too big or too difficult, break it down into steps.

3 – Have a photo of yourself at a weight you would be happy to achieve on the fridge. Every time you go to the fridge, look at that photo and ask why am I that weight again?

A lot of time, when people are looking to lose weight, the way they view themselves is negative. There are things they hate about their body, which leads to just hating their body. If you can change your mindset from I need to lose weight, I’m overweight, I’m fat or whatever it is to “Why am I fit and healthy and xkg?” Or I am strong and the perfect weight for my body. If you can get your mind right, the rest will follow because our body is basically a robot controlled by our mind. Shift your mind, and your life will change. If you have done any sort of work with the Law of Attraction or manifestation, you will know how strong our mind really is and how capable we are of changing our reality just by changing our mind.

So, what can I do about this?

1 – Instead of waking up in the morning, feeling sluggish and doing the same old thing, make a decision. Make the choice to be positive. When you go to bed at night, as you turn off the light and get all comfortable, ask yourself why you wake up feeling refreshed and full of energy.

2 – Choose to see the possibility in life. Instead of walking outside and grumbling about life’s responsibilities, see the sunshine and the rainbows and choose to feel awesome.

3 – Start setting goals, for anything and everything. Set goals for weight loss, set goals for food intake, set goals for exercise. Set goals for unrelated things – incoming money, family life, etc. Start creating an action plan for those things to happen. If you don’t have a plan to make them happen, they are literally just a dream. If you are into spiritual and again, law of attraction and manifestation types of things, you will know that the universe loves to see a goal combined with action.
